ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Two members of the Southern Illinois volleyball team were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team. Jennifer Berwanger was named MVC First Team Scholar-Athlete, while Kristy Elswick received MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention honors.

Berwanger, a sophomore outside hitter, led the team in kills this season averaging 3.64 kills per set and digs with 4.06 per set. Berwanger started in all 29 matches for the Salukis, posting a .233 hitting percentage. Recording 1,103 attempts this season put Berwanger at the No. 5 spot in school history for attempts in a season.

Elswick, the team's senior libero, became the all-time leader at SIU for digs in a career last season with 1,534. This year Elswick widended the gap even further, setting the all-time record at 1,930. She was second on the team in digs per set, averaging 3.70. Elswick also ranked second on the team in service aces, averaging 0.26 per set. She started every match at libero for the Salukis in her four years at SIU.

The Salukis ended their season 17-12 overall, 7-11 in conference play. Under head coach Brenda Winkeler's fourth season, Southern begain the season 9-1 for the best start to a season in school history.
