Des Moines, Iowa - The SIU women's tennis team competed in the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships this weekend with Martina Vianna Ce and Emily Whitney finishing the highest for the Salukis, both with second place finishes.

Laryssa Ferreia of Wichita State defeated Emily Whitney, 6-2, 6-1, to finish second in the Flight No. 7 singles while Lenore Lazaroiu, also of Wichita State, defeated Martina Ce, 6-0, 6-3 in No. 5 singles play.

"I thought that we performed overall with our singles but doubles could have been better, " Head coach Audra Nothwehr said. "Emily (Whitney) and Martina (Ce) did very well and we saw some very tough Wichita State girls in the finals."

In No. 2 singles action, Vishakha Sheoran finished fifth after defeating Lindsey Erickson of Creighton 6-0, 6-4, while Ame Blacketer also took home a third place finish after defeating Franziska Steinhardt of Illinois State, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 10-4.

Fadazi Mawisire also finished in third place in the No. 1 singles flight when she was victorious over Veronika Leszayova of Drake, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, the Salukis saw less success as the pair of Vishakha Sheoran and Jessica Flannery dropped their third place match against Northern Iowa's Phoebe Walker and Laia Gonzalez.

The Salukis will wrap up their fall season at the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 23-28 in East Lansing, Mich.
