Women's Tennis wins first home match, 6-1

CARBONDALE, Ill - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team competed in their first home match of the season Wednesday, defeating SIU - Edwardsville, 6-1. The Salukis (6-2) started off to a good start in doubles action, sweeping the Cougars to capture the doubles point. Sabine Tsala Mvilongo and Jessica Flannery teamed up at the top seed, grabbing an 8-5 win over Carli Connors and Laura Horning. At No. 2 doubles, Martina Vianna Cé and Michela Cruise topped Kelsey Laird and Stephanie Clark, 8-3. Andrea Courtney and Amanda Taillefer defeated Ali Wulfers and Amanda Niebur at No. 3 doubles, 8-3. "Doubles was a little rocky at the start," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "But once we got going, we were able to win several games in a row." Southern Illinois continued their success into singles, taking five of the six matches from SIU- Edwardsville. At No. 1 singles, Tsala won the tiebreaker against Connors, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4. Cé won her match against Horning, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Flannery competed at No. 3 singles, with a 6-3, 6-1, win over Laird. Agata Skorupska grabbed an easy win over Wulfers at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Taillefer kept the winning streak alive at No. 5 singles, defeating Sarah Rhein, 8-4. Courtney's match against Clark was defaulted due to sickness, with the 2-1 final given to Clark for the point. "Singles play was solid for the most part," Nothwehr said. "Jessica, Martina, and Agata all dominated their matches."
The Salukis are now 6-2 will be back in action Tuesday, March 11 at Arkansas State. Southern Illinois 6, SIU-Edwardsville 1
