Women's Tennis defeats Murray State, 4-3

PADUCAH, Ky. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team defeated Murray State, 4-3, Sunday in Paducah. The Salukis have not had a victory over the Racers since 2003. SIU (5-2) was unable to capture the doubles point, falling in two of the three matches to give the Racers a 1-0 start. Jessica Flannery and Sabine Tsala Mvilongo teamed up at No. 1 doubles against Angela McGahee and Anne Pennington, but fell 8-4. At No. 2 doubles Michela Cruise and Martina Vianna Cé battled for the win over Lyndsay Ottosen and Alexis Webb, but lost in the tiebreaker 9-8 (4). Amanda Taillefer and Ame Blacketer were able to grab the win at No. 3 doubles against Lynsey Bochenek and Katelyn Fulcher, 8-6. The Salukis were down 1-0 heading into singles, but came back to defeat the Racers by winning their last three singles matches played. At No. 1 Tsala lost the first set, but battled back to defeat McGahee 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Cé had a huge match at No. 2 singles, battling for a win in the second set, defeating Pennington, 7-5, 7-6 to win the match for the Salukis. At No. 3 singles Cruise grabbed the victory over Bochenek, 6-3, 6-1. No. 4 singles saw Flannery and Webb competing for the point, but Webb edged past Flannery, 6-2, 6-4. Agata Skorupska fell to Ottosen 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, while Talliefer won No. 6 singles against Adriana Alvarez in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
"It came down to winning the last three singles matches," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "Martina had great match, battling back for the win. I'm very proud of the team, it was a huge win against Murray State." The Salukis will be back in action March 5 for their first home match of the season, facing SIU-Edwardsville, which was rescheduled due to weather.
