Women's Tennis sweeps IUPUI, 7-0

PADUCAH, Ky. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team swept IUPUI Saturday, 7-0. The Salukis are now 4-2 after defeating the Jaguars (3-11). SIU (4-2) had no trouble capturing the doubles point, winning all three doubles matches. At the top seed, Sabine Tsala Mvilongo paired up with Jessica Flannery, defeating Allison Thompson and Vanessa Carna, 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, Martina Vianna Cé and Michela Cruise grabbed an 8-3 win over Andrea Burkhardt and Emily Holsapple. Amanda Taillefer and Andrea Courtney teamed up at No. 3 doubles, cruising to an easy 8-2 win over Dana Gardner and Lisa Gebhard. "Once we got started, we did really well and stayed focused," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "We did a good job of stepping in and taking the point. We really put pressure on them." The Salukis finished off the match, winning all six singles matches with two set victories. Tsala started off singles action at the top seed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Burkhardt. Cé stepped up at No. 2 singles, defeating Thompson 6-2, 6-1. Cruise faced Carna at No. 3 doubles, picking up the win, 6-2, 6-0. Flannery defeated Holsapple, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 5 singles, Agata Skorupska played in her first match of the regular season, with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win over Gardner. Courtney rounded at the match playing No. 6 singles, with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Gebhard. The Salukis never allowed an opponent to score more than three points, marking their first sweep of the season.
"We took care of business and won big," Nothwehr said. "I'm really proud of everyone." The Salukis continue action on Sunday against Murray State. Southern Illinois 7, IUPUI 0
