Briley Bergen Places 12th In 25K At World Open Water Championships
Dec. 1, 2004 By Lou Antoine DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - SIU junior Briley Bergen completed her fourth trip to the World Open Water Swimming Championships by finishing 12th out of 18 competitors in the 25K event in a time of 5:54.41.2 on Wednesday. "I'm very pleased with the way she finished, simply because she has done very well in the pool and she has managed to do well at the world championship level in open water swimming at the same time. This is not an easy task for any athlete said Rick Walker," SIU head coach and U.S. National Team Open Water Director and head coach.
"This is the first time competing in the middle of the school year, instead of coming off of open water training for Briley. We're looking forward to her coming back to SIU to finish out the collegiate season and then we'll really focus on open water training, which will give her a better result at the 2005 Open Water World Championships."
Germany's Britta Kamrau (5:43.09.6) won the 25K event as well as the 10K on Monday. A long distance swimmer from Tampa, Fla., Bergen is recognized as one of America's top distance swimmers over the last seven years, winning 11 national titles in the 10K, 15K, and 25K. She joined the national team in 1997 under the guidance of Walker and has excelled. Bergen finished 20th out of 24 swimmers in the 10K on Monday. She finished eighth and 16th in the 25K and 10K at last year's world championships respectively. Her best finish in a world championship event was in 2001, when she finished sixth in the world in the 25K. Bergen returns to the pool when SIU travels to Fort Pierce, Fla. on January 5, to face Tampa, Texas Christian and host Indian River Community College.
