CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois senior outfielder Krystal Stein was selected to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) on Wednesday.

Stein, from Nashville, Ill., posted a 4.0 cumulative grade point average in speech communication, in addition to leading the Salukis with 28 runs scored this season to cap off an impressive career on and off the field.

Stein, who was also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team in 2006, became just the sixth Saluki softball student-athlete to be named to one of the three Academic All-America teams twice during her career.

She finished the 2008 season with a .243 batting average, and recorded 36 hits, three doubles, a triple and drove in six runs, while also being selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team, Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team, and one of Southern Illinois' 25 Most Distinguished Seniors.

In addition to being a two-time Academic All-American in her career, Stein was chosen to the MVC Scholar Athlete First Team three times (2006-2008), and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team twice (2006, 2008).

This is the sixth straight year the SIU Softball program has placed at least one student-athlete on an Academic All-America team.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
