Women's Golf set to begin fall season at Towson Golf Classic
Sept. 11, 2009
By Beth Miller CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Women's Golf team will begin their fall season Sept. 14-15 at the Towson Golf Classic in St. Michael's, Maryland. The Salukis return four golfers this season, Alex Anderson, Carly Flynn, Meg Gilley and Alisha Matthews, and welcome freshmen Jenna Dombroski, Amber Phillips and Shaina Rennegarbe. In a 36-hole qualifying last weekend, the Salukis determined the five golfers who will travel to the Towson Golf Classic. Rennegarbe qualified for the No. 1 spot, with Matthews in a close second, followed by Gilley, Anderson and Dombroski. "We are traveling with two freshmen, two sophomores and one junior," says head coach Diane Daugherty. "We sound young, but I really think these guys know they can be good and I'm excited for the season." The Salukis will compete with nine other teams including Fairfield, Fairleigh-Dickinson, Dartmouth, Yale, Long Island University, St. Francis (Pa.), Mt. St. Mary's, Towson, and Longwood. The Salukis hope this tournament prepares them for upcoming competition where they will face Big Ten and Big 12 teams.
"This is a great trip for us to get our feet wet," Daugherty says. "It will be good to see where we stand before facing those Big Ten and Big 12 teams."
