April 11, 2009
By Beth Miller RICHMOND, Ky. - The Southern Illinois University Women's Golf team is in 14th place of the after day one at the Eastern Kentucky University Spring Invitational in Richmond, Ky. The Salukis jumped to 14th place in the second round, after finishing round one in 15th place. The Salukis shot 660 (338-322) after the first two rounds of play. Previous Missouri Valley Conference golfer of the week, Kate Laegeler, led SIU with 162 (81-81). Braidy Hood shot a 166 (83-83), while Alex Anderson was right behind with 167 (88-79). The two freshman rounded out the Saluki lineup with Meg Gilley shooting a 169 (90-79) and Alisha Matthews a 172 (86-86). Head coach Diane Daugherty looks for the team to move up tomorrow after a few setbacks got the team off to a rocky start. "We didn't arrive until yesterday and due to tornado warnings we were unable to get in a practice round," Daugherty said. "We hadn't even seen the course until this morning." Of the 18-teams in competition, Central Arkansas is in first place with Eastern Michigan and the University of Toledo grabbing second and third place, respectively. The University of Richmond is in fourth place, while Murray State rounds out the top five.
The EKU Spring Invitational will conclude with one 18-hole round on Sunday. Play begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m
