Diane Daugherty

Player Profile

Hometown:
Centralia, Mo.

Position:
Head Coach

Experience:
22nd Year

Southern Illinois women's golf head coach Diane Daugherty knows a little bit about what it takes to win. As a part-time touring professional, she won the LPGA Senior Division Midwest title in 2006, finished first in the Illinois Open in 1995, and second in 1997 and 1998. She also won the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Division National Tournament in 1995 with a three under par score.

Daugherty will put her expertise to work in her 22nd year guiding the Saluki women's golf program.

The 1993, 2004 and 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year has guided the Salukis to MVC Championships in 1998, 2000 and 2007, and second-place finishes in five MVC Tournaments. She also had the league's `93 titlist (Tracey Pace), `98 titlist (Jamie Smith) and 2004 titlist (Kelly Gerlach).

In conjunction with the 100-year celebration of the MVC, Daugherty was named the All-Centennial coach for the league.

Daugherty coached SIU to Gateway Conference Championships in 1988 and 1990, as her `90 squad set a Gateway record with a 37-stroke win over rival Illinois State. She was named Gateway Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1990. The 1988 team won by 30 strokes over Wichita State on its home course, with SIU boasting medalists in both of those tourneys -- Lisa Meritt (`90) and Julie Shumaker (`88).

Daugherty has played in four Mazda-LPGA tourneys and two U.S. Opens, while competing nine times in the Rail Charity Classic. She participated in the 1994, `95, `96, `98 and 2001 McDonald's LPGA tourney, and made the cut in the 144-player fields for both the `91 and `93 Mazda-LPGA events. She captured LPGA Sectional titles in 1989, `90, `92, `93, `94, `97 and `00, and was the LPGA Midwest Section Coach of the Year in `90, `92, `93, `95, `00, `01 and `03. She is also a Class A member of the LPGA.

Daugherty serves as a summer clinician for Golf for Women magazine, Canadian National Railroad, and Cadillac. The Cadillac clinics are in conjunction with David Ledbetter and Tom Watson. She is in her fifth year as the tournament director for the Illinois State High School Association's state girls' golf tournament.

A Centralia, Mo., native, Daugherty serves as an instructor in LPGA Educational Programs. She was also listed among Golf for Women's Top-50 Teachers of 2000.

The 1978 Stephens College product won the 1981 Missouri State Amateur before turning pro in the fall of 1983. In 1985, she was a top-10 money winner on the Futures Tour, but her professional career was cut short by knee problems.

Daugherty played four years of golf and basketball at Stephens before she began coaching volleyball and softball there. In 1980, she received her master's in sports psychology from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Outside of golf, Daugherty serves as a board member of both the St. Francis CARE Animal Shelter and the Southern Illinois Regional Social Services.
