Dec. 5, 2006 By Shalae Schulte
MOBILE, Ala. - The Southern Illinois (3-5) women's basketball team, held scoreless the final 3:50 of the game, fell to South Alabama (4-4), 60-59, in non-conference action Tuesday night at the Mitchell Center. The Salukis went to the free throw line twice in the final minute of regulation up 59-58, both times missing the open end of a one-and-one. Erica Smith picked up her fifth foul with eight seconds left, fighting for a rebound with South Alabama's Monique Jones, who drained two free throws to put the Jaguars up one. The Salukis' Jayme Sweere took the final shot of the game, but it was short as USA's Patrice Brunner got a hand on the ball, falling short for the win. The Salukis held a 12 point lead, 53-41, their largest of the game with just under nine minutes to play. South Alabama exploded on a 13 to four run, including 11 straight points from USA's Whitney Woodard. The senior forward finished with a game-high 19. The Salukis played catch up the entire first half, down 10-3 to start the game. Back-to-back buckets by Dana Olsen brought Southern back within three. A three by Debbie Burris tied the game at 10-10 with 12:33 left in the first half. The Jaguars pulled ahead 29-21, their largest lead of the first half with 3:39 to play, but four straight jumpers, including two from Cortney Sales, deadlocked the game 29-29 at the half. Jasmine Gibson tied a career-high 16 points, 6-of-12 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 at the line to lead the Salukis. The sophomore added four rebounds, one assist and two steals. Carlai Moore finished with 14 points, two assists and two steals, fouling out with 3:35 left to play.
Sweere and Burris chipped in eight points each, Sweere adding a game-high six boards. Smith also grabbed six boards, along with two steals and an assist, while Erin Pauk tied a career-high eight assists, adding two rebounds. SIU had a season-best nine steals to USA's one, and outrebounded the Jaguars 32-28, marking the seventh of eight games this season the Salukis have outrebounded or tied their opponents on the boards. SIU will head back out on the road to Brookings, S.D. to take on South Dakota State, the third stop on a four-game non-conference road stretch. Southern picked up a 75-59 win over the Jacks a year ago in SIU Arena. |
