Updated Oct. 24,2007 Susan Koering begins her fourth year as an assistant coach for Southern Illinois University. She coaches the post position, assists in recruiting, scouting and game preparation. Koering is also the team's liasion for academics. As Saluki head coach Dana Eikenberg will attest, one of Koering's major strengths is her ability to motivate different types of people. "Susan is an outstanding post coach," Eikenberg said. "She has great patience and poise with young players and really is able to help them reach their potential. She was a huge key in Carlai Moore's success." Prior to her arrival at SIU, Koering held similar responsibilities as a member of Eikenberg's staff at UMKC for four seasons. She worked to develop a young Kangaroo frontcourt, helped with scouting and game preparation, assisted with recruiting and was in charge of academics and team travel. Before UMKC, Koering served as a graduate assistant at Ashland (Ohio) University from 1998-2000, where she obtained her Master's Degree while holding several coaching responsibilities for the Eagles. She coached the perimeter players, coordinated scouting and film exchange, and assisted with recruiting, while serving as the team's liasion to the booster club. As an undergraduate, she attended the University of Iowa, where she was a senior captain for the Hawkeyes. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary History Education in 1997. While at Iowa, she earned several honors, including the Iowa Board of Control of Athletics Academic Award in 1995-96 and 1996-97. Koering was also named Big Ten Conference scholar-athlete on two occasions. Additionally, she was the 1997 winner of the Kris Rogers Memorial Scholarship and was a four-year member of the dean's list. Susan is recently engaged to Nate Orvis. |
