Men's Tennis defeats Racers, 6-1

PADUCAH, Ky. - The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team defeated Murray State Wednesday in Paducah, 6-1. The Salukis improved to a 5-3 record after their victory over the Racers. The Salukis (5-3) swept the Racers in doubles, grabbing the point for a quick 1-0 start. Lucas Waked and Anton Leonenko competed at the top seed with an 8-5 win over Christ Horton and Hunter Gerlach. At No. 2 doubles, Hugo Vidal and Mariano Restrepo defeated Yuri Pompeu and Nicholas Ksiezopolski, 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, Chase Miller and Sebastian Rubiano grabbed an 8-4 victory over Adam Perry and Jadir Semensin, rounding out the doubles match to capture the point, giving SIU a 1-0 lead. "We are starting to play more consistent doubles, with all three teams playing well," said head coach Dann Nelson. "We were just a few players deeper than Murray State this time around." In singles action, Waked cruised in the No. 1 match against Pompeu, with a 6-0, 6-1 win. In No. 2 singles, Vidal won his match in the third set, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Restrepo was unable to hold off Horton at No. 3 singles, falling 7-6, 6-7, (10-8). Leonenko played Nicholas Ksiezopolski at No. 4 singles, grabbing the win, 6-4, 6-0. Rubiano and Semensin battled for the win at No. 5 singles, Rubiano earned the point with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Miller closed out the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 in over Mike Headford. "Lucas played an exceptional match at No. 1 singles," said Nelson. "He never let Pompeu set any momentum." The Salukis will be heading to Honolulu this weekend for a match against Hawaii - Pacific on Monday and a match at the University of Hawaii - Manoa on Tuesday.
