CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois junior men's golfer Todd Obergoenner had his stellar season on and off the field culminate Tuesday with a selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Third Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Men's At-Large program for the Academic All-America program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Obergoenner, from Cape Girardeau, Mo., is the first SIU men's golfer to ever be named to one of the three at-large Academic All-America teams after posting a 4.0 cumulative grade point average in university studies, and tying for the team lead with five rounds in the 60's and posting a 75.4 stroke average in 12 tournaments. He was also named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team, and also became the first men's golfer to be named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V At-Large First Team. Obergoenner placed in the top five three times, top 10 five times, and top 20 in seven out of the season's 12 tournaments. He also put his name in the record book after firing the second-lowest 54-hole total in school history at 12-under-par 204, and tied for the lowest third-round score with a 5-under 67 in the last 18 holes at the ASU Indian Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. Following the ASU Indian Classic, Obergoenner earned his first-career State Farm MVC Men's Golfer of the Week award, and first Prairie Farms MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor. He is also one of five Saluki men's golfers who will return from a team that finished in second place at the 2008 MVC Championship in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, which tied the program's best finish all-time. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
