Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-off Classic Day One Standings

PINEVILLE, Ky. - The Saluki men's golf team battled the humidity Monday to shoot a 4-over-par 580, and leads after 36 holes at the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-off Classic.

SIU broke away from the eight-team field early with a morning-round even-par 288, followed by a 4-over 292 to put them 10-strokes in front of the tournament host Morehead State (590).

"This was a good start to the season for us," said head coach Leroy Newton. "We had a few breaks not go our way, but everyone contributed and I was proud of how we played."

Junior Blake Driskell sits alone in first place individually after firing an 18-hole career-best 4-under-par 68, and 2-over 74 to pace Southern Illinois.

Close behind Morehead State in third are Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb University with a 591 each, and Tennessee-Martin (595) rounds out the top five.

Junior Patrick Scheil, who made his Saluki men's golf debut after transferring from John A. Logan College, sits tied for fifth after posting rounds of even-par 72 and 1-over 73.

Freshman Luke Daily, who also made his collegiate debut, is currently tied for 18th with a 36-hole total of 149 (78-71), and seniors Phillip Collier (71-79) and Todd Obergoenner (77-74) stand tied for 21st and 25th respectively with a 150 and 151.

Individual participant, junior Jordan Cox, is also tied for 14th after carding a 4-over 148 (71-77).

Southern Illinois will look to secure the tournament victory in the final 18 holes of play Tuesday with a 7:30 a.m. CT shotgun start at the par-72 Wasioto Winds Golf Course.

"We set ourselves up pretty nice today," said Newton. "Now we have to go out and play like we're tied with the teams behind us, and finish the job."
