Track and Field athletes compete at Junior Championships, Dunbar advances to World Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Southern Illinois track and field teams sent eight athletes to the 2008 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium June 20-22.

Distance runner Daniel Dunbar advanced to the IAAF World Junior Championships July 9 in Budgoszcz, Poland, after winning the men's 10,000-meter run in 30:34.09.

Men's sprinter Brandon Deloney finished fourth in the 200-meter dash in 21.44.

In the men's throws, Colin Otto finished 15th in the hammer with a final toss of 180-09 (55.09m). Jake Dieters also finished ninth in the discus with a mark of 175-09 (53.56m).

For the women, Gwen Berry picked up the top finish, fifth in the hammer with a final toss of 176-02 (53.70m). Berry also finished 18th in the triple jump with a leap of 37-10 (11.53m). Olga Ciura threw the hammer 144-01 (43.93m) for 15th place.

Megan Hoelscher ran 11:05.44 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for sixth, while Emily Toennies ran 17:39.38 for 11th in the 5,000.

The top two times in each event advanced to the world championships.
