DES MOINES, Iowa - The Southern Illinois track and field team began competition at the 99th annual Drake Relays today.

Sophomore distance runner Jeff Schirmer was the only Saluki in action on the first day of the three-day meet, which is being held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Schirmer competed in the 5,000-meter run, placing seventh with a time of 14:21.18.

The time is a personal best for Schirmer in the event, surpassing the 14:44.85 he ran at last year's Missouri Relays.

The Salukis will be back in action tomorrow when the Drake Relays resume at 8:00 a.m.
