CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University junior thrower Brittany Riley was named Missouri Valley Conference Field Athlete-of-the-Week and American Track & Field-Athletes Only Magazine Athlete-of-the-Week earlier today.

Riley, who hails from Flossmoor, Ill., broke the world record in the weight throw during the final day of the Gladstein Invitational on Jan. 27. Her record throw travelled 80-07.50 (24.57m), and surpassed Erin Gilreath (24.23m set on Feb. 18, 2005) for the new world mark.

Riley, who won the weight throw in all three of SIU's indoor meets, earned her third MVC Field Athlete-of-the-Week award this season.

In addition to the MVC honor, Riley was also tabbed Athlete-of-the-Week by American Track & Field-Athletes Only Magazine, which recognizes an outstanding performance each week by American high school and college athletes throughout the 2006-07 school year.
