Men finish fourth, women fifth at MVC Track and Field Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Southern Illinois track and field teams combined for five meet titles and 16 All-Missouri Valley Conference honors as the men finished fourth (95 points) and the women fifth (105 points) at the State Farm MVC Championships Sunday at Drake. Ty Davis picked up her sixth MVC title and her sixth and seventh career MVC honors, defending her 800-meter run title in a time of 2:10.90. She also ran the lead leg of the 4x400-meter relay team along with April Heath, Bianca Stuart and Andrea Norris that finished second in 3:42.38. Katie Ringelestein scored points for the Salukis, fifth behind Davis in the 800 in 2:17.13. Deck went on to finish fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:02.28, while Heath and Stuart paired with Leslie Murillo and Andrea Norris for a fourth-place finish in the 4x100 relay in 46.56. Norris picked up two MVC honors with second-place marks in the 100 and 200 dashes. She ran 23.95 in the 200 and 11.51 in the 100, both regional qualifying marks. After defending her hammer title and earning all-league honors in the discus, Brittany Riley scored more points for her team with a 45-05.75 effort in the shot put, good for fourth. Other women scoring points for the Salukis included sixth and eighth-place finishes in the triple jump for Mikeya Nicholson (39-02.50) and Judeka Adams (38-11.75) respectively. In the pole vault, Kate Foglesong, Jacque Menke and Ashley Tjardes all cleared 10-00. Due to a judges decision, Foglesong was awarded seventh, while Menke and Tjardes tied for eighth. Lindsey Wagner also picked up a point in the 1500, finishing eighth in a time of 4:46.55.
On the men's side, Brenton Siemons picked up the only meet title the final day of competition, winning the shot put with a best toss of 58-02.50. Fellow throwers Tom Smith (51-00) and Joe Paradiso (50-08.75) threw for fifth and seventh respectively. After picking up a meet title Friday in the 10,000, Jeff Schirmer finished third in the 5000 in 15:12.71 for his second conference honor of the meet. Sammy Biggs ran a provisional qualifying mark of 46.98 for a third-place all-conference finish in the 400. He went on the anchor the men's 4x400 team of Brett Brachear, Greg McBride and Antoine Jennings finishing sixth in 3:18.32. Biggs also ran the second leg of the sixth-place (41.91) 4x100 team along with Brandon Love, Jennings and Derrick Fisher. McBride went on to finished fifth in the 1500 in a time of 3:58.58 and eighth in the 800 in 1:56.35. Antwon Stapleton earned all-league honors in the triple jump with a 50-09.50 effort, good for third place. Geoffrey Daniel picked up fifth with a jump of 46-05.50. Northern Iowa ran away with the men's team race, while Wichita State won on the women's side. |
