Track and Field picks up nine top-five finishes at Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Southern Illinois track and field teams recorded one new NCAA regional-qualifying mark, won two meet titles and recorded nine top-five finishes the opening day of the Indiana Invitational Friday. Jeneva McCall, already a regional qualifier, won the women's discus for the second-straight meet with a toss of 172-05 (52.56m) and Jessica Vermeulen won the women's javelin throw with a best mark of 133-00 (40.53m). Kendra Deck picked up the new regional mark running 1:00.81 in the 400-meter hurdles for second place and a trip to the Mideast Regional Meet in May. Teammates Nefeteri Williams (1:02.60), Connie Hicks (1:03.28) and Tredene Davis (1:03.39) finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively. Jumpers Judeka Adams and Mercedes Dunn finished second and third in the triple jump for the Salukis. Adams finished with a best jump of 37-02.50 (11.32m) and Dunn leaped 36-01.50 (11.01m). Emily Toennies was the top finisher for Southern in the 1500-meter run placing seventh in 4:42.25. On the men's side, Maxim Bakana had the top finish on the day, second in the triple jump with a leap of 48-04.75 (14.75m). Geoffrey Daniel finished fifth in the event at 45-05.25 (13.85m). In the men's hammer, Joe Paradiso picked up a third-place finish. Already regionally qualified in the event, he threw 185-02 (56.43m). Teammate Joe Mueller finished sixth, throwing 180-01 (54.90m).
In the 1500, the Salukis finished eighth through 11th led by Greg McBride in 3:58.48. Mohamed Mohamed (3:59.09), Kyle Kirchner (4:00.45) and Neal Anderson (4:01.23) finished ninth, 10th and 11th respectively. Thomas Fielder (15:19.23) and Tyler Bradford (15:24.20) came in eighth and 10th in the men's 5,000. The Salukis wrap up competition at the invitational Saturday with the field events beginning at 9 a.m., running events at 10 a.m. |
