Track and Field garners 10 top-15 finshes at weather-shortened Sea Ray Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois track and field teams garnered 10 top-15 finishes at a weather-shortened Sea Ray Relays over the weekend. The 41st annual event was shortened for the first time in relay history due to lightning in the area. At the time of the cancellation, four events were in progress, resulting in only partial results for the men's open javelin and long jump as well as the women's shot and long jump. Saluki thrower Sasha Leeth picked up the highest finish of the weekend, along with a regional qualifying mark in the women's hammer. The freshman threw 179-08 to finish second in the event. Other top finishes for the women include an 11th-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 39-01.25 by Mikeya Nicholson and a 2:11.64 effort in the 800-meter run from Ty Davis for 13th place. A'Seret Dokubo finished 15th in the 3000 in 10:16.57, then turned around to run the lead leg of the distance medley relay (12:24.30) that finished 15th with Kendra Deck, Toni Whitfield and Nefeteri Williams. For the men, the distance medley team of Greg McBride, Jason Brosseau, Brett Brachear and Jeff Schirmer finished fifth in 10:05.49. In the 400, Sammy Biggs ran 47.87 to finish 11th.
In the field events, Antwon Stapleton, Trevor Poore and Blake Brachear finished sixth, eighth and ninth in their respective events. Stapleton jumped 49-09.25 in the triple jump, Poore cleared 6-04.75 in the high jump and Brachear topped out at 15-07 in the pole vault. Mohamed Mohamed and Brittany Riley separated from the team for the weekend to compete at the MT. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Mohamed finished 27th in the 10,000 in 30:02.45 late Friday night. Riley is the only Saluki athlete left to perform this weekend. The junior thrower will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays Sunday at 12 p.m. CST. |
