Track and Field takes four meet titles at Ole Miss Invitational

OXFORD, Miss. - The Southern Illinois track and field teams picked up four meet titles and 25 top-five finishes at the Ole Miss Invitational Saturday.

Brenton Siemons led the way for the men with two individual titles in the throws. The senior threw 186-05 in the hammer and 55-07.75 in the shot put for each title. Blake Brachear picked up the third title for the men clearing 15-01 in the pole vault.

Other top finishes in the men's throws include third place finishes from Jake Dieters in the discus (164-04), Tommy Smith in the hammer (179-02) and Trevor Poore in the javelin (167-11). Smith also went on to finish fifth in the shot (51-02.25) and sixth in the disc (155-07) while Poore cleared 6-02.75 for fourth in the high jump.

Geoffrey Daniel finished fifth in the triple jump with a best jump of (47-01).

In the men's running events, Kyle Kirchner picked up the best finish for the Salukis finishing second in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:42.25. Brad Wrage finished third in the 5,000-meter run in 15:19.24 and Willie Knox, fifth, in the 400 hurdles in 53.20.

On the women's side, Brittany Riley picked up the lone meet title with a toss of 218-00 in the hammer. She also went on to finish second in the discus (150-06) and sixth in the shot put (44-00.75).

Fellow thrower Rickael Roach finished second in the hammer (169-03), third in the discus (149-04) and seventh in the shot put (43-00.50). Sasha Leeth added a third-place finish in the hammer with a toss of 168-00, and Toni Whitfield picked up fifth in the javelin with a 122-11 mark.

 

 

Wrapping up top-five finishes in the field events was Bianca Stuart with a second-place finish in the long jump with a final leap of 19-11.50.

In the running events, Andrea Norris finished second in the finals of the 100-meter dash in 11.82. Nefeteri Williams also finished second, but in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:43.97.

Kendra Deck ran 1:01.71 in the 400 hurdles for fourth place, while Terri Counts finished in 14.25 in the 100 hurdles, good for fifth place.

The Salukis return to action Friday and Saturday, April 18-19 at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
