Women's Track and Field Win's MVC Title, Men Take Fourth

CARBONDALE, Ill. - It was down to the wire at the 2005 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships as the Southern Illinois women's track and field team entered the final race of the evening, the 4x400 meter relay. Wichita State had 119 points and the Salukis had posted 118 points through 16 events. As the Saluki 4x400 anchor Sherlenia Green crossed the finish line in first place, she held up her index finger to all to see. The Dawgs were number one.

Southern Illinois took first place with 128 points, followed by Wichita State with 123. SMS, the 2004 team champions, took third with 92 points followed by Illinois State (75), Indiana State (63), Northern Iowa (35) and Drake (11). The SIU women garnered 11 All-MVC athletes as Saluki head coach Connie Price-Smith was named the MVC Women's Coach of the Year for the first time in her four-year coaching career.

The Saluki men finished fourth behind Northern Iowa with 152 points, winning their sixth straight MVC title. Indiana State finished second with 91.5 points, followed by Wichita State with 73.5 points and SIU with 73. Illinois State (58) finished fifth, with Drake (42) and SMS (33) rounding out the seven-team field. The SIU men won three events and five athletes earned MVC honors.

The SIU women won five events on their way to the title, sweeping the top three places in both the weight throw and the shot put. Amarachi Ukabam won both events throwing 71-03.50 in the weight and 54-09.50 in the shot. Both marks broke the MVC meet record while the weight mark broke the all-time MVC record, the SIU Recreation Center track record and re-broke her SIU record.

Ty-Nica Davis defended her 800 meter run title winning the event in 2:09.53, second all-time at SIU. The junior also ran the second-leg of the championship 4x400 team along with Marquita Vines, Kelsey Toussaint and Green in a time of 3:43.94. Toussaint also finished second in the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.61 to earn MVC honors.

 

 

Inna Turevsky won the triple jump title with a leap of 41-07.25, breaking her school record, the meet record and track record. The senior also finished third in the long jump with a leap of 19-06.25, fourth all-time at SIU.

For the SIU men, Joe Byrne, Fred Rule and Tony LaChiana came up big for the Dawgs, each winning an event. Byrne won the 5000 meter run on Friday night in a time of 14:33.68. The junior also finished fourth in the 3000 meter run (8:30.01) on Saturday while LaChiana took top honors in the event, winning in a time of 8:26.62. LaChiana finished fifth in the 3000m in a time of 14:45.36.

Rule won the high jump clearing 6-10.25 on Friday.
