Riley breaks world record at Gladstein Invitational
Jan. 27, 2007
By Jeff Honza BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Southern Illinois University junior thrower Brittany Riley made history today when she broke the world record in the weight throw at the Gladstein Invitational. A native of Flossmoor, Ill., Riley's throw of 80-07.50 (24.57m) surpassed previous world record holder Erin Gilreath (24.23m set on Feb. 18, 2005). Ironically, both of those throws came in the Gladstein Fieldhouse. Riley is having a stellar year for the Dawgs thus far. A two-time Missouri Valley Conference Field Athlete-of-the-Week, she won the weight throw in all three of SIU's indoor meets. Riley, who continues to shatter numerous throwing records, automatically qualified for NCAA Indoor Nationals on her first throw of the season on Dec. 8. Bianca Stuart also finished the day strong. She placed second out of 20 competitors in the long jump with a 19-05.25 (5.92m) mark. SIU returns home to host the McDonald's Invitational on Feb. 2-3.
