Alan Turner enters his fourth year as the sprints and hurdles coach.

In his first two seasons at Southern Illinois University, Turner has lead the sprints and hurdles group to three individual Missouri Valley Conference titles and the men's 4x100 relay title. He has had five MVC runner-ups, 13 All-MVC performances, seven NCAA Regional Qualifiers, three USATF Junior National qualifiers and nine performances that cracked the school's all-time top-five list under his tutelage.

In 2007 Turner guided Andrea Norris to the SIU indoor 60-meter record of 7.52 seconds. Norris collected four individual All-MVC honors in 2007, along with qualifying for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 200m. Freshman, Sammy Biggs was All-MVC in the 400m at 46.98 and qualified for the USATF Junior Nationals.

In Turner's first season he coached Felix Anderson, who was the high point scorer on the track at the 2006 MVC Indoor Championships, winning the 400m and taking runner-up in the 200m twenty minutes later. Anderson won the outdoor 200m title and was a regional qualifier in 200m, 400m and 4x100m relay. Also that season, freshman Stevie Warren earned All-MVC honors in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, as well as qualifying for the USATF Jr. Nationals in the 100m.

Before coming to SIU, Turner spent two years at Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL. as an assistant coach in the sprints and horizontal jumps.

While at Proviso East, he coached one Junior National Champion, three Junior National qualifiers, two Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state champions, three all-state honorees and six sectional champions. Three of his athletes from the 2004 team received Division I track scholarships.

Prior to Proviso East, Turner assisted triple jumper Kamau Sullivan in qualifying for the USATF Nationals in 1993 and 1994, as a member of the Nike Indiana Track Club.

As an athlete, Turner was a three-time All-American at Indiana University. He won five Big Ten titles, including two long-jump, two 400-meter and one 4x400-meter relay. He was a team captain for the Hoosiers for three seasons, winning five straight Big Ten Conference team titles from 1990 indoor to 1992 indoor. In 1991, he won the NCAA indoor long jump title and was runner-up at the NCAA outdoor championships. Turner still holds the Indiana record in the outdoor long jump and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay.

Outside of collegiate competition, Turner finished in the top-eight in the long jump at the USA Outdoor Championships four times. He was a member of five U.S. National teams, winning the gold medal at the 1991 World University Games in the long jump.

A native of North Chicago, IL, Turner earned a bachelor's degree in public finance and an economics minor from Indiana University in 1992. Professionally, Turner has worked as a trading assistant with Conseco Capital Management in Carmel, IN and over seven years with First Chicago and Bank One as a portfolio manager in Chicago.
